Newcomers to the Kansas City area find a wide variety of enjoyable neighborhoods and real estate from which to choose. From long-established ethnic communities to luxurious new real estate developments, there's an appealing option in Kansas City  for every real estate need and lifestyle. The following is a brief introduction to some of the most popular neighborhoods and communities in our area.

On the Kansas Side ..

With a national reputation for its outstanding schools, Johnson County is also known for its first-class shopping and picturesque, prosperous suburban communities. Residents throughout the county have easy access to downtown, Kansas City International Airport, and all parts of the metro area thanks to a superior highway system.

Fairway, (A Kansas City Suburb) population 4,164, is a lovely close-in residential neighborhood appreciated for its charming homes and is served by the Shawnee Mission School District.

Leawood,  (A Kansas City Suburb) population 24,500, is one of the finest residential communities in the suburbs with both established and newly developed luxury neighborhoods such as Hallbrook. Students attend Blue Valley and Shawnee Mission School District schools.

Lenexa, (A Kansas City Suburb) population 37,536, is a thriving city experiencing both residential and industrial growth. An easy commute to just about anywhere in the metro area, Lenexa has homes in all prices ranges with students attending Shawnee Mission schools.

Merriam,  (A Kansas City Suburb) population 12,153, is a friendly "small town" city with quiet neighborhoods and pretty parks that residents of all ages enjoy. Children attend Shawnee Mission School District schools.

Mission,  (A Kansas City Suburb)  population 9,470, is known for its well-established neighborhoods, parks, schools and shopping. The city got its name from the Shawnee Indian Mission originally built in the area and is in the Shawnee Mission School District.

Mission Hills,  (A Kansas City Suburb) population 3,585, is one of the United States' most exclusive cities. With meandering tree-lined streets, country club golf courses, fine homes and gracious mansions, Mission Hills has no shopping centers, industrial areas nor business districts. Children attend Shawnee Mission Schools.

Mission Woods,  (A Kansas City Suburb) population 227, is the smallest incorporated city in Johnson County. Located within minutes of the Country Club Plaza, yet within the Shawnee Mission School District, this exclusive little city is filled with fine homes and picturesque streets.

Olathe,  (A Kansas City Suburb) population 75,000, is the county seat and one of the county's fastest growing areas. Olathe has two airports, a growing industrial area and thriving population served by its own national award-winning school district.

Overland Park, (A Kansas City Suburb) population 130,513, is a popular suburb strongly appealing to young families who enjoy the shopping convenience, comfortable homes, excellent parks, and close proximity to Johnson County Community College. Children attend schools in the Olathe, Blue Valley and Shawnee Mission School Districts.

Prairie Village, (A Kansas City Suburb) population 23,243, is a charming city with homes of all prices ranges, excellent schools, lovely wooded parks, first-rate shopping and country clubs. A popular choice with young families because of the Shawnee Mission School District schools.

Roeland Park, (A Kansas City Suburb) population 7,700, is a friendly Midwestern community with a strong "neighborhood" feeling and a combination of new and older homes in the Shawnee Mission School District.

Shawnee,  (A Kansas City Suburb)population 44,536, has more than 13 parks and plenty of peaceful family neighborhoods with shopping nearby. Children attend Shawnee Mission Schools.

Spring Hill, population 2,300, offers the beauty of the rural countryside only 35 miles from downtown. An easy commuter's drive down 1-35 with "small town" flavor. Children attend schools in the Spring Hill and Blue Valley School Districts.

Westwood, (A Kansas City Suburb) population 1,786, is another favorite with street-after-street of picturesque homes surrounded by perfectly trimmed lawns. Students attend Shawnee Missions schools.

Wyandotte County, named for the Wyandotte Indians, is home to many ethnic communities, as well as much of the area's heavy industry.

Bonner Springs, population 6,800, is a rural community blending newer homes and older neighborhoods. It's also the home for many of the area's major entertainment attractions including Sandstone Amphitheater, The Renaissance Festival and the Agricultural Hall of Fame. Students attend schools in the Bonner Springs Unified School District 204.

Kansas City, Kansas, population 144,276, is rich with cultural diversity including Strawberry Hill with its Slavic settlements and annual cultural festivals. Kansas City, Kansas, has its own school district.

Piper, (A Kansas City, Kansas Suburb) (unincorporated) is popular with many because of its schools, small-town atmosphere, and convenient location for commuters. Just west of 1-435 in Northwestern Wyandotte County, the area is a haven for those who appreciate friendly surroundings away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Leavenworth County has both strong business and residential areas. It's also the location of Fort Leavenworth and the Federal Penitentiary. Many people who live in the area commute to Kansas City, Lawrence or Topeka.

Lansing, population 7,600, is known for its comfortable new residential areas and easy commute to Fort Leavenworth and Kansas City. Children attend schools in the Lansing Unified School District 469.

Leavenworth, population 40,782, is a progressive, growth-oriented community less than a half hour from the metro area. One of the oldest military posts in the West, Fort Leavenworth has played an important role in the growth of the city. The schools are in Leavenworth Public School District 453.

Tonganoxie, population 2,647, was originally a farming community but now is home for many who work in Kansas City. Tonganoxie is known for its small town friendliness and commitment to education. Students attend schools in Tonganoxie Unified School District 464.

 

On the Missouri Side ...

 

Jackson County is the center of population for the metroplex with its business and residential districts, government headquarters, company home offices, and headquarters for many nationally and internationally recognized organizations. Jackson County communities vary dramatically from historic urban neighborhoods to luxurious lakeside estates.

Blue Springs, (A Kansas City Suburb) population 45,500, is a booming community filled with comfortable family homes, schools, and great recreational facilities surrounded by wonderful lush scenery. Schools are in the Blue Springs R-4 School District.

Grandview, (A Kansas City Suburb) population 25,3 52, is located in the southwest comer of Jackson County. What once was a Midwestern farming community is now an important industrial area just a short drive from downtown Kansas City. Pleasant neighborhoods attract many to this community. Students attend schools in the Consolidated School District #4.

Independence, (A Kansas City Suburb) population 1 14,93 1, is the hometown of President Harry S. Truman, as well as the Truman Home and Truman Historical Library. It's also world headquarters for the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the town's friendly Midwestern character and Victorian architecture of this city's streets. Students attend schools in the Fort Osage, Blue Springs R4, Kansas City, Missouri, and Independence School Districts.

Kansas City, Missouri, population 43 5,000, is a city known for jazz, Country Club Plaza shopping, fine dining, fountains and boulevards, professional sports teams, Hallmark Cards headquarters, and its dozens of wonderfully unique neighborhoods including Hyde Park, Quality Hill, Westport, Plaza, Ward Parkway, Brookside and Union I-Ell. The school districts that serve this area are Hickman Mills, Center, and the Kansas City, Missouri, School Districts.

Lee's Summit, (A Kansas City Suburb) population 60,112, is a city rich in history and wonderful suburban neighborhoods. It's a place where residents can enjoy the hilly landscape and still be close to the city. The area has its own school district.

Raytown,  (A Kansas City Suburb) population 30,601, offers all the best of small town life -- good schools, comfortable homes, friendly neighborhoods, convenient shopping, high school sports --just a short commute from downtown Kansas City. Children attend Raytown School District schools.

North of the river in Clay County, is an area rich in history and pleasant communities within easy driving distance of Kansas City and Kansas City International Airport.

Gladstone,  (A Kansas City Suburb) population 26,243, is a solid community north of the river with progressive neighborhoods and many community activities. Students attend schools in the Kansas City North School District.

Kansas City North's population reflects the fact that 20% of Kansas City, Missouri, lives within Clay County borders. It's a wonderful alternative to big city living with peaceful surroundings and rural landscape ... still only minutes from downtown.

Liberty, (A Kansas City Suburb) population 22,000, is a beautiful college town, home to William Jewell College. Residents enjoy the peaceful hillsides, friendly neighbors and many cultural events tied to the college. Public education is provided by the Liberty School District.

North Kansas City, population 4,130, boasts a fine array of pretty park, peaceful neighborhoods, good schools, growing industrial and warehouse facilities and a large central business district. Not to be confused with Kansas City North, residents send their children to North Kansas City Schools.

 

North of the river in Platte County is where you'll find Kansas City International Airport and many fine communities with a countryside punctuated by tobacco barns, vineyards and apple orchards.

Parkville,  (A Kansas City Suburb) population 2,893, looks out over the Missouri River. It's home to pretty "small town" neighborhoods, quaint antique shops and historic Park College. Students attend Park Hill School District schools.

Smithville, population 1,900, is located near Srnithville Lake and is the perfect place to escape to from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Just a few minutes from Kansas City International Airport and downtown, commuters appreciate the country atmosphere. Public education is provided by the Smithville R- I I School District.
